Is it worth installing solar panels on my roof?

I live in sunny southern California and someone told me that installing solar panels on my roof can fully power my home on a summer day. Is this really true? How much would it cost me to do this? My home is a two story home in the suburbs. What are the pros and cons of doing this?

For many people it is not worth it because they pay a professional installing solar panels company to do the work.
