10 Advantages To Growing Hydroponic Vegetables

October 14th, 2009

Growing your own hydroponic vegetables is great, it's a fun hobby and you can make money on the side.

Take a look at these reasons for growing hydroponic vegetables.

1. Hydroponic vegetables can grow up to 50% faster than there soil grown counterparts! This is because you have full control over the vegetables growing conditions which you will have manipulated to be at optimum levels.

2. You don't use soil! So you're not confined to growing in a garden or in plant pots. In fact, if you live in a crowded city centre apartment block then it won't make a difference to your ability to grow whatever you want.

3. There can be no soil borne diseases being passed on.

4. There will be no need for pesticides! No soil loving pests will be getting near your hydroponic vegetables, you will not have to purchase any expensive chemicals.

5. Once you have set up your hydroponic vegetables system and its up and running, costs are around 20% lower than traditional soil gardening methods. You could also make money by selling your produce.

6. You will be able to grow more hydroponic vegetables in a smaller area. This is despite hydroponic vegetables being bigger on average, their roots are smaller which enables this to happen.

7. Maintenance time is practically none existent! All you really need to do is pick your vegetables when they're ready. There is no weeding to be done in hydroponic gardens.

8. The yield is year round! You will be able to grow vegetables off season and sell them when the price is the highest. You control the growing conditions and it doesn't change just because its winter.

9. You can grow your hydroponic vegetables anywhere; window ledge, rooftop, cellar, bedroom, garden, conservatory or green house.

10. Hydroponic vegetables grow on average 40% larger than soil grown vegetables. This is because they have access to all the nutrients they need and when ever they want them.

How to Mow Less and Still Have a Great Lawn

September 29th, 2009

Having a great and beautifully manicured lawn generally means you have to spend a lot of time on it. That includes some mowing and doing some pruning and modifications on the hedges. But wouldn't it be wonderful if you can cut the amount of mowing required?

Less mowing does not mean ugly lawns. Sure, the grass will grow a bit longer if you chose to mow your lawn at least one a week, around two inches instead of one. But there is no visible or any significant difference in height at all. And the good thing about less mowing is that you cut your mowing time in half.

Letting your grass grows is another way to keep your grass healthy and more beautiful. The roots also grow deeper in the process and helps the grass absorb the nutrients from the soil. In the process, you save a lot of maintenance costs because healthier grass and lawns are easier to maintain.

A useful tip you can also use in trimming your mowing time can be found in the blades of your mower. Always mow the lawn with sharp mower blades. Not only do you cut the grass efficiently, there would be no need to mow the lawn for the second time. With sharp mower blades, there will be no need for you to manually pull out the grass that the mower passed, saving your energy as well as your time.

The variety of grass you have in your lawn can also be factor on your mowing performance. Grass varieties that are native to your geographical location are much easier to tend to than those that aren't. Foreign grass varieties would require a bit more of your usual attention if you want to keep your lawn in shape.

One last tip, do not overwater your grass and make sure you practice soil ventilation. Overwatering actually hampers the growth of the grass' roots, while the absence of ventilation within the soil is unhealthy for the grass. As stated earlier, grasses that are healthy are easy to take care of. Ventilating the soil also helps in keeping the moisture flowing. which helps in cutting the need to water your lawn often.

Unattractive lawns are not necessarily the byproduct of less mowing. You just need to follow the suggestions given in this article and you'll be surprised of the huge amount of time you have in your hands. With more time you have, the more things you can do. In that respect, you'll become a more productive individual.

Solar Christmas Lights – Brightening Your Holidays with No Energy Costs

September 9th, 2009

Solar Christmas lights are one of the most low cost Christmas decorations, helping the homeowners to save anywhere from around 100 W per each string of their lights. Another benefit of solar Christmas lights is that they turn on and off on their own, with the aid of a special photo cell making your Christmas even more magical.

One of the main benefits of solar Christmas lights is that they eliminate the need in electrical outlets. Another benefit is that they help the homeowners to really save on the cost of energy. These lights get charged from the sunlight, and then they automatically come on with the onset of the evening. These lights allow you to decorate any tree in your garden, no matter how far away it is located from the house.

Small solar panels of solar Christmas lights can be conveniently placed on a tree branch or stuck into the ground. The panels usually include four solar cells, a light sensor and a regular rechargeable AA battery. The cells are capable of converting solar energy into regular electricity. A bright and sunny day, will allow the battery to completely recharge.

Solar Christmas lights are also available with special built-in polycrystalline cells, which better absorb the sunlight, allowing the lights to shine bright even after a snowy, rainy or an overcast day.

It is actually quite simple to calculate how much sun you need for your lights to stay on throughout the whole evening and the night. Each hour of sunshine will allow the lights to shine for an hour in the evening.

Solar Christmas lights come in different colors and shapes. The most usual colors include red, yellow, green and blue, while the most common shapes include oval, round and teardrop shapes. The type of the light emitted can also be chosen to your preference, starting from a bright light, and to dim soft light.

Once Christmas is over, it doesn't mean that you have to take your solar Christmas lights down. You can keep them in your garden, in order to; for example, decorate arches in your garden with this pleasant type of light. The lights can also be used for various other holidays, such as anniversaries and birthdays, as well as for lighting of pathways, porches, etc.

When choosing your solar Christmas lights, it is better to look for the lights with a rechargeable and replaceable AA battery. This type of a battery will allow you to enjoy your Christmas lights, even if they did not recharge on rainy or snowy days. All you would need to do is to charge batteries with a regular charger. Lithium batteries are not a good choice, since most likely you won't be able to replace them, yourself.

Main advantages of solar Christmas lights are that they will allow homeowners to save hundreds of dollars on their electric bills. Other advantages include eliminating the need in electrical outlets, not having to turn the lights on and off, and not having to worry about the wires running across your yard.

It might be a good idea to watch your yard for at least two or three days before placing your solar lights. The most important thing to note is that the area, where you want to place your solar Christmas lights, does not get a shadow cast. Another important thing to remember is that solar Christmas lights operate best when their solar panel is in direct sun throughout the day.

Solar Garden Lights: Modern Cordless Garden Devices

September 5th, 2009

Solar garden lights are a new low cost way to light up your garden. These lights do not require wires, they are very easy to set up and very safe. Solar garden lights will protect anyone in your garden from getting an electric shock.

All of the natural energy on Earth comes from sunlight. Solar garden lights are capable of utilizing, free of charge, solar energy to produce light. The lamps consist of solar cells (cells generating electricity when exposed to sunlight), a rechargeable battery (similar to a flashlight battery) and an LED (light-emitting diode, emitting light when current is passed through it).

Modern technologies allow solar garden lights to keep improving, producing more light for longer.

Benefits of Solar Garden Lights

1. The lights are extremely easy to set up. When needed, solar garden lights can be also moved with the same ease. These lights can be placed anywhere throughout your garden, during the daytime hours in which there is sun.

2. Solar garden lights are much safer than regular lighting, since they operate with a very low voltage.

3. Solar garden lights are very energy efficient. They are powered by DC (direct current) electricity, i.e. common batteries being charged by the sun and thus giving electricity for the lights to shine. They allow you to save on electricity and fossil fuel costs.

4. Most of the solar garden lights come with a built in photo sensors, which make the lights go on and off according to if there is sunshine or if there isn't. At the same time, most of the lights have an on and off button for maximum convenience.

5. Solar garden lights are very environmentally friendly, since they do not produce dangerous pollutants, common for regular electricity utilities.

6. Solar garden lights will create a unique pleasant ambiance in any garden. The lights are very stylish, nice-looking and compact.

7. Merely four hours of a direct exposure to the sun will provide your garden with up to nine hours of light in the evening. Good solar garden lights are also capable of shining even during the months with limited sunshine, such as autumn and winter.

8. These lights eliminate the need in electrical wiring and electric sockets for the lights to operate. This in turn means that there are no wires to be damaged.

What to be Aware of When Selecting Solar Garden Lights

1. Make sure that the spike of the lights, which goes into the ground, is either made of a durable plastic or is made of metal.

2. Opt for higher capacity batteries and a larger area of solar cells, to ensure that your lights shine bright, and that they are long lived in the evenings. Make sure to check the feedback from other buyers of this type of solar garden lights in order to select the lights with the desired light intensity.

3. The best solar garden lights should be perfectly weatherproof. Otherwise, if it rains and the water starts to leak into the sealed solar panel, the lights will most likely stop working.

4. Remember that on rainy and cloudy days, solar garden lights will not work for as long as they would work on bright and sunny days. That is why it is important to place the lights, where there is sun in your garden in the day.

5. If you are experiencing any problems with your solar garden lights, be sure first to check for the following problems: corroded batteries, low quality batteries or corroded battery terminals.

6. It is better to choose solar garden lights with the built in Off/On button for your convenience.

Concluding:

Solar garden lights are low cost, safe and a modern way to light up your landscapes. Solar garden lights will provide any landscaping with a special relaxing atmosphere. These lights are environment friendly and cost efficient.

Tips on Bedroom Design

September 2nd, 2009

As we begin our discussion about room design, we should probably determine the difference between designing a space and decorating one. I will be talking about interior design, not differing dcor tastes. Interior design really refers more to the functionality and physicality of the room. Decorating is what is done after the major design is laid out. In addition, it is based more on individual preferences. I would like to present you with a list of what I consider to be the most important and basic components of designing a room.

1. Probably the most important piece of our design puzzle is that the room must be proportionate to those who will use it. This is not nearly as complicated as it sounds. It just means that all the parts should match in size relative to each other. Say you are designing a room for a toddler. A king size bed in his room that measures 10 by 12 would be the definition of disproportionate. That bed does not fit in that room or with that person. It is not a matter of taste it is just true.

2. Always remember to let that sun shine in! Nothing compares to natural lighting. It makes any room come to life. When making sure that your room lets in enough sunlight, keep in mind this is one time that there is no such thing as too much!

3. Lets stop here for a little breather. Take a deep breath. Now let it out slowly. Okay, now that was not just a recess. It is our next big piece. We need air. Design your room with that in mind. Give ample space for airflow. It makes the room cooler and more crisp and fresh. If you obeyed guideline two, then your ample light-providing windows can also get that air moving. If you were unable or unwilling to have many windows installed, then do not forget that there are other options for creating airflow. Fans placed strategically can increase the flow. In addition, there are some great rooftop ventilation systems available.

4. Everyone needs their space. Design must reflect that need. You should be able to move about freely in your room. We have many doors in bedrooms. Just the entrance and a closet are basic. If you have a suite with a bathroom attached or have an outside door, it becomes more challenging to design a room that allows free movement. Just remember that a challenge does not mean it is impossible. Working within limits, can still provide enough space with some smart planning.

5. Although I did mention earlier that interior design was different than decorating, there are some points where the two can intersect. You need to remember that there are certain things that should be included or at least left room for in your design plan. This is definitely one place where you can express a bit more creativity. Simple things like light fixtures and window dressings can be included. They can add to the design and the dcor at the same time.

I hope that this list gets you excited at the prospect of designing a bedroom. This is only a short overview of some of the important basics of interior design. There are many resources out there if you would like to delve further into this topic. If nothing else, I know that the next time you are visiting someones house, you will be looking to see if they read this article, too. If not, you may want to show them.

How to Make a Hand Braided Rug

September 2nd, 2009

Rugs have been used for many centuries to accent a room or provide a place for a pet to call home, or even to relieve the stress that furniture can put on carpet or bare flooring. Making your own rug is not only rewarding because it is something you make with your own hands, but it is rewarding because it can dress up just about any room and also, provided you follow instructions and your craftsmanship is impeccable, can be passed down to other generations as well as making a great gift.

The first thing you will need to do is take a trip to the fabric store to choose the colors of fabric and style that you want. You will need to choose a very sturdy fabric because remember, this is an area rug or a rug that might have a lot of traffic on it and you do not want it to fall apart in a year. Fabrics that are made of strong material such as denim or very strong cotton are both good choices. Keep the dcor of the room in mind too. You do not want to make a purple and pink rug for a room that has primarily neutral colors in it so stick with the color of the room, but you can be creative in design.

The next thing you will want to do is make sure that you purchase enough material to create the size of rug you want. Most braided rugs are typically either 2x3 Ft. or 3x5 ft. and you can shape them either oval or round depending on your needs. Obviously, there are rugs that are quite a bit larger than this, but for making your first rug, I recommend choosing one just this size to start out with so that you can get a feel for what it will take to create a braided area rug much larger. So with that said, you will need to purchase enough material to cut strips of fabric at least twice that amount because you will be braiding and coiling this rug, it is better to have too much than not enough.

When you have your material ready to go, you will want to cut 3 strips of each fabric into long strips that are approximately 3 inches wide. If you are going for the alternating color look, then make sure that you have the colors in a row the way you want them to appear in the coil. For example, if you are doing a red, white and blue rug, it is best to put the stripes in a red, white and blue order instead of red, blue and white. You will achieve a more flow-like look by doing this.

Next, you will want to sew the ends of each strand together at one end and you can refer to that end as the top of your braid and then once you have sewn them together, you can start braiding until you reach the end. Once you reach the end, you will want to sew that end together to complete the braid.

The final step is going to be coiling and sewing the coil to finish the area rug. You will coil the braid just like a snake would coil and make sure that you start from one end of the braid and place the color you want visible in the center of the rug up.

You will need to hand stitch the inside of the coil with nylon thread because this will be the strongest holding thread. Each time you coil the braid around to the spot where you made your first hand stitch, you will want to make another hand stitch in the same spot for each coil around.

When you reach the end of your coil, you will tuck in the ends between the folds of the previous coils and sew that down firmly. Now you are ready to check the rug for any frays or loose threads and trim them off or sew them down.

You project is complete and you now have a new accent piece to place in any room you choose!

Great Places to Search for Furniture on a Budget

September 1st, 2009

There are plenty of people at one time or another that find themselves having to live on a tight budget and you will often find people who are first time homeowners that fall into that category as well as people who might be going through career or lifestyle changes.

Believe it or not, it is actually very easy to come by furniture that does not look like what I call early marriage, you know the hand-me-downs and the garage sale items or the culmination of what you had or your spouse had before you got married, the stuff that really clashes. It is very simple to find furniture that does not cost a fortune and can add a more coordinated, mature look to your home.

As a single parent at one time, I had a very tight budget and post divorce, you do not necessarily want to keep furniture items that remind you of the union of marriage that has now been dissolved, so I had to find ways to make my very tight budget stretch in order to get some new furniture when I moved.

I do not want to mislead you into thinking that these ideas will instantly lead you to the perfect piece of furniture you are looking for because chances are, it wont. In fact, you will probably have to do a lot of searching to find everything you want and are looking for, but its not too hard to have a good time doing this because the trips you take to look for furniture can be quite interesting and comical as well.

One of the best places to look is at garage sales. Depending on the time of year when you are shopping, you can find some great deals on some very well taken care of furniture that people just have either no room for or just do not want anymore. The last couch I found at a garage sale was well maintained and had no flaws or stains and it was very close to what I was looking for and I was able to pick it up for $25.00. Now, seriously, how can you beat $25 for a very well maintained couch? I have not been able to find that great of a deal since, I have found some great deals, but none as great as that.

Flea Markets are another good choice because there are tons of communities that have a flea market on the weekend and vendors who are looking to make you a deal to get rid of their stock are usually bountiful at a Flea Market. Just because their furniture might be cheap does not mean it is cheaply made, remember, these vendors do not have the overhead that the owners of a furniture store do and this is why they can cut you a great price break.

Thrift stores, consignment shops, scratched and dented rooms in the bigger furniture places are all great places to look for your next piece of furniture on a tight budget. Keep these tips in mind when you are looking and also, keep in mind that you might want to discuss this with family members, they might have a great piece of furniture to add to your home that they are willing to part with or have no use for.

If you are looking for new ways to decorate your home. Check out Birdhouses and more at this website. They have a fantastic selection of home decor.

The Tricks Of Landscape Lighting

August 30th, 2009

If you are looking to improve the overall look of your property and home, you should definitely consider landscape lighting. Landscape lighting has been used throughout the years as a tool to show off yards, landscapes, walkways, and homes. Not only does landscape lighting help to show off these amenities at night, but they also provide other features such as safety, lower crime, and lowers your insurance risk.

Landscape light fixtures use very low voltage electric current to help the fixtures stay on all night long and to eliminate any risk of fire or explosion. The lights range in size from being very small, to very large depending on the type of look you are trying to achieve. Electric lighting is easy to install as you can really mix and match large and small lights as each light plugs into the electric wire running underground.

Because of the different size of the light fixtures, each fixture is made to give a certain type of effect. For example, if you have a large tree in your yard that you would like to show off, a flood light is really the best type of light to use. If you have flowers or leafy growth plants that need some attention, small spot lights are a great way to accent these types of plants.

Gardens can be pleasant to walk through at night with a little help from low voltage lights. Outdoor lights can also be used to light up statues, artwork and fountains. Many people use lights to light up ponds and waterfalls within their yards as well.

Having landscape lights that brighten up pathways and walkways is also very important. Safety is a huge issue these days and the last thing you want is someone slipping on your walkway or tripping and falling because a walkway was not well lit. Having lighting to show visitors walkways and pathways is a great way to make your property more safe and to reduce the risk of an insurance claim.

We hope this article has been helpful to you in looking for and hunting for landscape lighting.
