Homemade wind generator questions?

June 4th, 2009

I have some things I was wondering about making a homemade wind generator. I pulled an alternator out of Ford Taurus. I was thinking about overhauling it to be a more efficient generator. If I overhaul it and it works, can I buy a inverter and pump the AC voltage into my electric meter? It will not produce enough power for my needs but if I do this would it not lower my electric bill at least a little bit as I would be selling back some power? Also do you need to have a special electric meter installed to do something like this?

Well, you do need permission from your power company, and they will install a special power meter and a special inverter, and ask for a lot of money upfront. Now in California, PG&E started installing these special electric meters that can be read with a wireless connection for free. I don't know about your state though.

But to answer your question about making a homemade wind generator, yes, it is possible. Also, the power company doesn't pay you, they reduce your power bill. Worse, the don't reduce your power bill at the market rate for electricity. They give you a lot less of a credit than what they buy electricity from other sources. I don't think it's fair but it's the way they do it right now.

Can I make a wind turbine at home?

November 15th, 2008

I want to make a wind turbine at home. I want to know how much this would cost? I do not want one of those massive things you see at wind farms. I just want to make a small wind turbine to power things such as an outside fridge and some lighting.

The first thing you need to do is to use the calculator on this blog to calculate the amount of watts your refrigerator or lighting pull. Once you know that number, you can then go about planning how to build a wind turbine at home and how big your battery bank will need to be and if you need to build more than one wind turbine.

The small wind turbine you need will cost about $150 to build. Probably the best step by step guide for doing this is here: http://www.mysolarsecret.com/how-to-build-a-wind-turbine.htm

The guide will show you how to get most of the parts from your local hardware store and what parts you need to buy. You can set up an entire wind power generator system using this guide in one day. It makes for a great weekend project.

Wind Turbine at home?

November 11th, 2008

In my local hardware store they have wind turbines for home use. Do they really work? How good are they?

Yes they really work. Now how well they work depends on where you live. Wind turbines generate the most power if you live in a place that has a constant breeze. If you do live in a place that is windy, you should get one. I have a feeling that if your local hardware store is selling them, then you probably do live in a place that gets lots of wind, that's why they are selling them there.

You can buy one or get one cheaper by building it yourself. I have used an excellent guide to do this. You can check the guide out at http://www.mysolarsecret.com/how-to-build-a-wind-turbine.htm

Does anyone know of any classes being held in or around Iowa on building homemade wind turbines?

September 20th, 2008

I'd really like to be able to get some in person time with someone or a group that has done this before so I can get some pointers and ask some questions on system setups etc. Thanks for your help and time.

I don't think you will find any. Go to http://www.mysolarsecret.com. You will find lots of good information.

Is it possible to construct a $100 wind turbine and from it obtain the equivalant of one gallon gasoline?

September 20th, 2008

I was discussing with an adversary of mine the possibility of this. I think it is possible over a period of time for a small wind generator to produce the same amount of energy that a gallon of gas will produce.
I saw a homemade wind turbine done at http://www.mysolarsecret.com/how-to-build-a-wind-turbine.htm. It was very practical and easy to build. My question is. What is the length of time that it would take to generate the same amount of energy from a gallon of gasoline?

There are many ways to (potentially) build an electricity generating turbine for $100 or less.

Comparing the energy derived from the turbine to the energy derived from a gallon of gas would depend on the efficiency of the engine burning the gas. Since no engine is 100% efficient, only a small portion of the gasoline's potential energy would be turned into work/force or electricity, while the rest would be lost as heat.
