Do you want the nuclear plants in your backyard or wind and solar?

November 3rd, 2008

John McCain said that he will build many nuclear power plants and that doing so will solve our energy problems. I've thought about this issue and decided that I really don't want a nuclear power plant or its waste in my area. I would much rather see solar and wind energy used. I have seen many examples of people generating power for their home with solar and wind power generators.

Solar and wind power systems are so much safter and cleaner than a nuclear power plant. There have been lots of advancements by DIY solar enthusiasts that are fed up with big oil paying lobbyists to slow the advancement of solar and wind power technologies in the home.

News reports are increasingly showing people have built their own solar power system for their home and are saving big money off their power bill. Solar and wind power use to be too expensive for the average Joe. Only if you were rich could you afford a solar panel system on your home. But now solar and wind power are becoming more and more affordable for everyone.

To answer your question, I think John McCain is a big oil guy. Dick Cheney, who quit his big oil executive position to be Vice President, endorsed McCain a few days ago. Also, the Bush family has ties with the Saudi royal family. Author and journalist Craig Unger documents $1.4 billion that has “made its way” from the Saudi royal family to “entities tied” to the Bush family, according to Unger’s controversial book "House of Bush, House of Saud.” John McCain voted with Bush over 90% of the time.

I think a vote for Barack Obama is a vote for solar and wind power. A vote for John McCain is a vote for big oil and perhaps nuclear power plants built in your backyard.

If you really want to know exactly how John McCain is tied to big oil, watch this video.

How can I build my own solar panels to install on my roof to power all home appliances? How many panels do I need?

October 3rd, 2008

I live in Maryland and an our old dumb governor signed a new electric bill back in 2000 to increase BGE power fees for the next 12 years or so. Electricity rate hike is in effect at 50% increase plus 5%-7% yearly until 2012. What is worse is that the Maryland government voted down to install windmills or extra power plants to help meet demand. Instead, they charge the people of Maryland outrageous prices and say that the best way to curb demand is to raise prices so that people conserve more! Yeah right. We know who's getting paid and not the FBI nor Congress wants to start a corruption investigation. I wonder why? Instead of moving out of Maryland, I would like to be able to generate my own power and be power independent from all these greedy, corrupted politicians. This is my way of "sticking it to the man".

You don't want to "make them" you want to "assemble them". And yes. You can do this for probably about the cost on one monthly power bill. Basically what you need to buy and then assemble solar panels, batteries, charge controller and an inverter.

If you want a solar power company to do this, it will cost you between $20,000 - $50,000.

If you want to buy the parts and then assemble them yourself, you can do it for about $200. Check out this very popular diy solar guide that will show you how.

Your roof has to be large, facing south, and with nothing in the way to shade any of it from the sun.

Now you can't be totally independent from "the man" at the power company, but you can put a big dent in his pocket. There are periods of time when there is no sun and so you will probably still draw a little bit of power but maybe not. If you set up an array of large batteries then you might be able to do it. You are not running your electricity from solar panels at all. You are running electricity for your house from an array of batteries. The only purpose of the solar panels is to charge your batteries.

Do the build your own energy kits with solar panels and windmills work?

September 30th, 2008

Nowhere as good as professionally made ones. Unless you are a mechanic and a EE, just leave it to the professionals.

Get electricity from the sun! Make your own SOLAR PANEL !

September 27th, 2008

Interesting analysis of solar panels. An explanation of solar modules and how they make up a solar panel and create energy. It's probably aimed at the lower intelligent crowd. The guy sounds like he smoked one too many joints in his life and he's talking really slow about stuff that is way too basic. It's almost insulting because it tells you that the person he made this video for he must think is pretty much an idiot. Nevertheless, here it is.

To start getting electricity from the sun!

Can I make my own Photovoltaic Solar Cell?

September 19th, 2008

Others have asked if they can buy solar cells and build their own system, but I am interested in actually making the photovoltaic layer. Efficiency is not as important as simplicity; size is not particularly important either but I would like to light a bulb or turn a small motor. With a pane of glass, polyester film and some other basis ingredients, I sure would appreciate some help!

You can make your own cells but the efficiency is so horribly low you'll be lucky to register it on a voltmeter. Most people won't have the facilities to make and process silicon so you have to find some other materials.

is it possible to constuct/buy/assemble your own solar panel?

September 14th, 2008

I live in Texas, where the sun is usually shining. Is there a cheap way to build a solar panel, or somewhere where you can buy/assemble a freestanding solar panel?

Very good question! Since most solar panels being sold are made in China, it is a great idea to make your own. Despite all the unsubstantiated claims to the negative.(Do some research before you Answer people!) you can build a solar panel.

Complete instructions are here: http://www.mysolarsecret.com

Can a 58 year old lady, a teacher ,of Literature, build her own SOLAR-ENERGY OPRATED CAR?

September 13th, 2008

TO fit into my shoe-string Budget, I was wondering, if I could get a solar-energy car made in MULTAN, one of the HOTTEST PLACES on EARTH.
Man-power is cheap here, but, I need to know, HOW THAT IS DONE.

You -could- build a car powered by solar energy.

Unfortunately, even if manpower is cheap, the price of the required technology doesn't yet fit into a shoe-string budget. If it did, every shadetree mechanic in the US would have built one by now :)

If you want to know what's involved in building the car, there's some information here: http://www.winstonsolar.org/info/intro.html
