Can two solar panels power a whole house?

June 30th, 2009

Can two solar panels power a whole house? My house has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, air conditioning, electric kitchen appliances, a 24" TV, and a computer.

I'm sorry to tell you that the answer is no. I've lived off the grid for 15 years and solar panels have come a long way. Even with the most expensive solar panels on the market, you would need about 15 solar panels and a dozen or so deep cycle batteries. If you live in the desert or any environment where you really need to run your air conditioning a lot, then you will need even more. Your air conditioner is the most power hungry "appliance" in your home.

You may want to use solar panels to power your whole house excluding the air conditioner. For your air conditioner, switch it over to gas.

Also, if you work during the day, leave your air conditioner off. In this case, your solar panel system that is powering your whole house is generating power and making your meter run backwards as you are selling the energy during the day back to the power company. Then when you get home at night, you buy energy from them when you turn your AC on.

You should be able to cut your bill by 75% or more doing this as long as you don't live in too hot a climate and thus don't have to run your AC that much at night.

How much would it cost to set up solar panels to provide energy for your whole house?

June 25th, 2009

I need to know how expensive solar panels are and how much to install. I know that you can't just put up solar panels and expect them to power your whole house. You have to convert the sunlight and store it in a battery bank. How expensive is that? How much does it cost for everything?

If you go to a professional solar power company and tell them you want enough solar panels to power your whole house, it will cost you between $20,000 and $50,000. There are some state programs that might subsidize this cost and there are also Federal income tax incentives.

Now if that's too much money for you, then you should consider building your own solar panel system. Basically it's a piece meal approach where you gradually build more and more solar panels and take more and more appliances in your home off the electricity grid until finally your whole house is solar power.

For a home of about 1,500 to 2,000 square feet, you would probably need about 300 to 400 square feet of panels. You would be generating electricity only in the daylight hours. That energy goes to your battery bank. The panels should be directed close to perpendicular to capture the sun's rays at noon. The optimum would be to follow the sun through its arc. The energy is changed with an inverter to A/C power and connected to the main electric grid, sold back to the power company when you are producing excess, you would draw back from the grid when you are needing more than you are producing.

For detailed plans on how to do this go to how to build your own solar power system to power your whole house.

How do I work out how many solar panels I need to run my house?

June 20th, 2009

How do I figure out how many solar panels I need to run my house?

This depends on your goal. If you wish to produce all of the electricity in terms of annual kilowatt hours that you use, your calculations should include that you will only get about 1/6 of the total energy output from an optimally place panel. That is a one kilowatt panel could produce at most 24 kilowatt hours in a 24 hour day if the sun were to shine continuously. Realistically, the 1 kilowatt panel will produce about 4 kilowatt hours per day.

Now, figure out how many kilowatt hours you use per year. Divide that number by 365 to get the average daily usage. Then divide that by 4 to get the number of 1 kilowatt panels you will need which are optimally oriented.

If you want an automatic calculator that does this calculation for you and even lets you put in the appliances you will be running off of it, go to:

How many solar panels do I need to power a small house?

June 20th, 2009

I only need to power fans and lights. How many solar panels do I need for my house?

Ok. Go to the solar power calculator here:
http://www.mysolarsecret.com/solar-power-calculator.html

At the top left side under "List load items", select the type of light bulbs you are using. For this example, I will select "Lights 100w equiv. fluorescent". Now there is no fan but a fan should use about as much electricity as a blender. So on the next row, in the drop down box, select "Blender".

Now select the wattage of solar panels you will build. I'm using 300 watts for this example.

Now select the city nearest you. In this example I'm using Fresno California.

That's it. The calculator tells you that you need 1 to 2 solar panels and that if you build it yourself it will cost you about $200 dollars.

Play around with the calculator, you'll get the hang of it.

How much do solar panels cost? How many would I need to power a 2000 sq/ft house?

June 20th, 2009

Where can I buy solar panels? Are you able to install them in town or do you need a special permit to put them on your roof? With energy prices going back up, I've got to do something now. I'm sick of the power company taking an ever increasing chunk of my income.

There's two main approaches, do it yourself solar panels and professional installation of solar panels.

To go 100% solar in a 2000 sq/ft house with a professional install will cost about $50,000. If you have the money, go for it. But most people don't. I'm talking 99% of the people out there. So here's a cheaper option: do it yourself solar panels.

The do it yourself approach is a piece-meal approach. You build one solar panel, then take something in your home off the power grid and put it on this solar panel and battery bank. Over time you build more and more solar panels, a larger battery bank, and you take more and more appliances in your home off the power grid.

For example, you could build 1 solar panel system for about $300 that will take your computer, monitor, tower, modem, and speakers off the power grid.

A couple months later or when you have the money, you take something else off the power grid.

Use this solar power calculator to calculate the number of solar panels you will need to build:

When will solar power cost effective for generating electricity comparing to traditional means?

June 18th, 2009

I have heard that the cost of solar power generated electricity is still not competitive to traditional forms of energy. I heard that solar power requires subsidies to be competitive.  Does anyone know what the cost difference is now? When will it be competitive to traditional forms of energy without the subsidies? What is the likelihood that this will ever happen? With what kind of technology?

It will become cost effective when researchers find a way to increase the output energy of solar panels. There are some new solar panels coming out that have a higher energy output.

Is it worth installing solar panels on my roof?

June 16th, 2009

I live in sunny southern California and someone told me that installing solar panels on my roof can fully power my home on a summer day. Is this really true? How much would it cost me to do this? My home is a two story home in the suburbs. What are the pros and cons of doing this?

For many people it is not worth it because they pay a professional installing solar panels company to do the work. If you go that route, it will cost you about $50,000 to install enough solar panels to power your entire home.  I know a guy who paid a professional company to install solar panels to run his pool and he would have to live to be 80 years old just to break even because the professional company charges so much.

Your other option is to do it yourself. Start off small and gradually take more and more appliances off the power grid and onto solar panels. You can build and install your own for practically nothing. Click here to read a review about a very popular solar panel book sold through this website.

How much does it cost to install solar panels at home?

June 10th, 2009

My family is really "Green" when it comes to our lifestyle. I just need to know how much it would cost for solar panels to provide our electricity. How many would one house need? Do they charge by the panel?

It is not that simple. You need panels, batteries to store the energy, an inverter. Your usage can be figured out by a professional who will ask you questions about your lifestyle to figure out your average usage, determining your panel/battery needs. You cannot run any high usage items such as electric dryers or electric stoves, or electric furnace (depending on where you live). There are a lot of variables. You will be looking at around $20-30000 per average 4 person household.

If you can follow instructions good, then you can do it for virtually free, minus the cost of solar panels with this guide
